Johnnie Hodges Sr., a 90-year-old World War II Navy veteran, was forcibly evicted from his home after he could not make his payments. He spent all of his savings on his late wife, Flora, who had Alzheimer’s.

When it came time to leave his home of 60 years, he had to be forcibly removed by police officers, who strapped him to a gurney and took him away.

The community didn’t want to see Johnnie lose his home, so a local businessman named Greg Elwood set up a GoFundMe page and has raised more than $110,000 to date. With a little help from Congressman Brian Higgins and HUD, Johnnie was able to buy back his home in Buffalo, New York.

“There’s no place like home,” said Johnnie. “I am so grateful that I am back to stay. And I am never leaving again!”
