Do you ever wish your dog could talk to you and tell you what’s on their mind? I know I do. But, did you know that without actually speaking, your dog is telling you a lot more than you probably know? Scientists have determined that because humans and dogs are so closely bonded, dogs have developed their own ways to tell their owners how much they love them. Check out these 10 small ways your dog tells you they love you every day.
1. Leaning on you.
When your dog leans on you, it’s a symbol of affection. Sometimes your dog will lean on you when he is anxious or has nervous energy, but him leaning on you is showing that you are his protector and he feels safe with you.
2. Staring directly into your eyes.
Oxytocin is released when a dog looks into their human’s eyes. This helps you bond with your dog and feel his love through looking into his eyes.
3. Yawning when you yawn.
A dog yawns when a person they love yawns. Just like yawning is contagious human-to-human, it is also contagious for dogs.
4. Lifting and wiggling eyebrows.
When a dog sees their owner, studies show they are more likely to lift their eyebrows compared to when they see a stranger. It’s a special signal that the dog is noticing someone they are deeply bonded with.
5. Cuddling with you after a meal.
A dog cuddling up to you after they finish a meal is a sure sign that they really love you. Gregory Berns, author of the book How Dogs Love Us, says that a dog’s action immediately after they finish their meal can show what’s most important to the dog, besides his food.
6. Watch you leave calmly.
If your dog watches you leave the room, or your home, calmly and doesn’t start panicking – it’s a sure sign that your dog loves you and knows confidently that you’ll be back soon.
7. Freaking out when you return home.
There’s nothing quite like coming home to your dog freaking out, because he’s so happy to see you! Jumping on you, wagging his tail out of control, and genuinely excited you’re back. This shows all the love!
8. Sleeping in your room.
Where does your dog like to sleep? If your dog likes to sleep in your bed, he loves you and doesn’t want to be separated from you. If you don’t want your dog to sleep in your bed, but your dog still wants to sleep in your bed, it’s still a sure sign of love.
9. Bringing you his favorite toy.
When a pup brings you his favorite toy of all time, it means he wants to play, but it also means much more than that. He’s bringing it to you, because he thinks of you as the leader of the pack and wants to share his joy of his favorite toy with you!
10. Enjoying your love.
Dogs can definitely tell if you love them or not, so show them all of your love and you’ll get it all back from them!
