Rachelle Chapman, was enjoying a fun time with friends for her bachelorette party in 2010 when one of bridesmaids jokingly pushed her in the pool. Suddenly, Rachelle felt numb and was trapped at the bottom of the pool.
“As soon as it happened, my body became stiff. I knew instantly that I was paralyzed and told my friends to call 911.” she tells ABC.
Rachelle had broken her C-6 vertebrate and was paralyzed from the chest down. Months of rehab followed near her alma mater of East Carolina University.
The wedding never happened, but her fiance never lost his commitment to Rachelle “We know we’re a strong couple and when I got hurt, it never crossed my mind that he would ever leave me because of it.”
“When I went to therapy and talking to some of the doctors, it’s at least 50/50 people leaving their partners after they are hurt.”
Her husband says, “We do as much as we can to maintain the lives that we had ahead of time, it’s just different. It may take longer to do certain things, but we keep as close as we can to who we are.”
As for the friend that pushed her in the pool, Chapman says she ultimately “had to tell her that we couldn’t be friends.” Still, Chapman says she doesn’t blame the woman—”we’ve all pushed somebody in a pool.“
The couple plan recently got married and have a show coming out on TLC about her entire ordeal.
