A dad from Toronto, Jason Thompson, and his 4-year-old son Xavier were spending a nice afternoon together when everything took a strange turn.
Thompson and Xavier boarded a bus at about 2 p.m. to ride back home from their outing at Victoria Park. A few minutes into the ride, the bus driver pulled over and told them they had to wait. After a while of waiting, Thompson asked the driver if he could just get off and walk if it was going to be a while. The bus driver told him that no one could get off the bus.
The next thing Thompson knew, there were policemen at the front and back of the bus. One of them asked Thompson, “Is this your son?”
Thompson spoke to the officer and let him know that Xavier was his son. The officer let Thompson know that they were called to the scene, because something seemed “off” and there was a father who did not look like his son.
Turns out, Thompson has albinism and so does his wife. Their son has darker skin than both of them, even though Thompson is part Jamaican and his wife is Indian.
The cops apologized and drove Thompson and Xavier home, while expressing their sympathy over someone actually calling in a complaint like this one in 2016 and turning on the sirens for little Xavier.
Thompson shared his story on Facebook and has received messages from parents who have experienced similar profiling.
The conclusions people jump to sometimes, without knowing anything whatsoever about a person, is just really sad.
