“I haven’t seen it in all my 34 years of nursing,” – Lynnette Coetzee, a nurse in San Diego, said to NBC 7 San Diego to the new parents.
Luis and Jaelyn, being a boy and a girl, are most likely fraternal twins because of their opposite genders. While anomalies have occurred, with identical twins being born different genders, it’s an “extremely rare” outcome, writes Bio-Medicine.
But that’s not even the craziest part. Jaelyn was born in the final minutes of 2015, while her brother Luis was born three minutes later, in 2016.
The twins’ father, also named Luis, spoke with NBC 7 about the event: “We were actually watching the clock. We wanted to see if we were one of the first ones.”
Given the timing, NBC 7 says that Jaelyn might have been the “last baby born in 2015 in San Diego County,” with Luis potentially being the first of the new year.
