Stephanie Decker, a brave mom in Indiana, saved her two children from a tornado that hit their home and in doing so, she nearly lost her life.
Stephanie heard the tornado coming and ran into the basement with her 8-year-old son, Domonick and her 5-year-old daughter, Reese. She put the children inside of a comforter and tied them into it and used her body as a shield to protect them.
Falling bricks and debris broke seven of her ribs, punctured her lungs and crushed both of her legs – leaving them barely attached to her body. Her children, however, were left completely uninjured.
Stephanie said she was conscious the entire time and knew if she didn’t get help quick that she would probably bleed out.
Her son, Domonick, raced for help and rescuers were able to find her and get her to the hospital, where they had to amputate both of her legs.
ABC News caught up with the family a year after the tragic event. “This is just a new way of living,” she told ABC News. “If the worst thing that ever happened is me losing my legs, I’m good.”
