Yuri was born with a rare urological birth defect known as bladder exstrophy, a disease that affects 1 in 25,000 people. Bladder exstrophy occurs when the abdominal wall does not form and can be fatal.
Even when his birth mother had given up on him, Yuri’s nurses never did. When he was ten-years-old, a social worker helped transport this Russian-born boy to the United States. He received care and attention at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
After a while, families stopped showing up to adopt him. That’s when Nurse Pam stepped in and did what she felt was right in her heart all along.
“As the days and the weeks went by, Pam Butler was falling in love with this child and this child was falling in love with Pam Butler.”
