1421242793Muscat: More than 30 families adopted four-legged friends from Oman in 2016, according to Nada Al Moosa, an animal welfare activist.

The local wadi dogs, often referred to as wild animals, have proved to be perfect pets in many houses across Europe, Canada and the United States.

“We give them the love we can spare, the time we can spare. In return, dogs have given us their absolute all. It is without doubt the best deal man has ever made.” – Roger Caras

Around 40 dogs from Muscat were transported abroad to new loving homes in 2015, compared with 35 dogs so far this year.

Al Moosa explained that the transportation fee varies depending on the location.

“It costs around OMR1,000 to send a dog to the United Kingdom, while it costs OMR450 for Europe and only OMR380 for the United States,” she explained.

“We put a dog’s bio on international websites and wait for interested adopters to approach us,” Al Moosa stated.

In Oman, wadi dogs are usually killed by the police in a bid to “control their population.”

A Royal Oman Police official had earlier told the Times of Oman that some instances of attacks on humans by wild canines have been reported.

But new owners of Omani dogs seem to disagree with such claims.

Nick, the proud owner of an Omani dog, which was found wandering as a puppy near a factory in Jallan Bani Bu Ali, has shared the dog’s story on her social media account.

“He was very playful and little did he know that he was about to be put inside a sack and thrown on the road…left alone for a slow and painful death. My husband was there in time to rescue him. He thought it would be easy to find a good home for him in Muscat, since he is leaving Oman soon, but that was impossible. I decided to go to Muscat and bring Nick with me to Mexico City,” she said.

“My dear Wadi dog is getting used to his new life in Mexico City… He is very surprised with the rain, the new sounds, but getting used to it,” she added
