Father Of Five Puts All Kids Through Boston College By Being The Janitor

For the past 15 years a 62-year-old father of five, Fred Vautour, has been lugging around his cleaning supplies to clean mirrors and scrub toilets in the Robsham Theater at Boston College. In doing so, he has been able to see four of his children graduate from Boston College and is about to witness his fifth do the same.

While working the graveyard shift, Vantour has been able to put all of his kids through college, which he said he never would have been able to do if he hadn’t landed this position. Because he is an employee of the college, all kids were able to attend tuition free and along with their scholarships,  Vantour made out paying only $3,000 per year for each child to attend. That’s a huge difference from paying the regular, steep price of tuition that comes out to about $66,000 annually per student.

Vantour told The Boston Globe, “It gave me a reason to be here. I used to joke with the vice president that I’d actually work for nothing because my kids are here because of that perk. I could care less if they even gave me a raise because my kids came here.”

Vantour’s daughter, Alicia, said that when she tells her friends and other students that her dad is a janitor at the college, they are confused as to how he would be able to afford to send all of his kids there.

Vantour had pretty much worked in the food industry since he was 14, where he started out washing dishes at a restaurant, Ritcey’s Seafood Kitchen. He then became a cook there and worked at that same restaurant until he was 41.

He started out at the college as a cook, where he prepared meals for 2,300 students at one sitting and then changed positions into being the nightshift janitor, because it paid better, he could work alone and it was much more relaxing than being a cook. He has worked at the college for a total of 22 years.

As each one of his children graduated from the college, he grew more and more proud of them, and of himself for being able to provide this type of education for not only one of his children, but for all of them.

I think it’s safe to say that Vantour is a loyal and dedicated man who has done an exceptional job at being able to provide top education for each one of his children through his job and that must feel like an amazing accomplishment.
