Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is expected to announce later today that Harriet Tubman, the slave turned abolitionist, will be featured on the new $20 bill. She will replace the seventh president and former slave owner, Andrew Jackson.
However, featuring a woman on the $20 bill was not the original plan. Last June, Lew announced that they would be replacing Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first treasury secretary, on the $10 bill in order to include a woman, after receiving calls from activists on the issue.
But, that decision caused backlash, because of Hamilton’s recent popularity from a successful musical based on his life. Hamilton will remain the face of the $10 bill.
The exact timing of the making of the new $20 bill has not yet been announced.
