Brenda Schmitz wrote a letter with three wishes in it right before she died, but instructed her friend not to mail it until her husband fell in love with another woman.
Brenda was the mother of four boys and a wife to her husband, David. She passed away in 2011 from ovarian cancer. A month before she died, she wrote a letter and wanted it to be delivered to the Des Moines, Iowa, radio station – Star 102.5. for their annual Christmas wishes submissions, but not until David was able to fall in love again.
“When you are in receipt of this letter, I will have already lost my battle to ovarian cancer,” Brenda wrote. “I told my friend once my loving husband David had moved on in his life and had met someone to share his life with again, to mail this letter to all of you at the station.”
Her first request written in the letter was for David’s new love to have a day of pampering. Brenda wrote, “She deserves it, being a stepmother to all those boys. Make her smile and know her efforts are truly appreciated from me. Thank you, I love you, whoever you are.” Jayne Abraham was David’s new love that he met in October 2012.
For the family, Brenda asked for a magical trip, so they could all spend quality time together and also for a night out filled with food, drinks and fun for the wonderful team of caregivers and doctors where she was treated at Mercy Medical Hospital.
There was an extra letter that she wanted given to Jane, who was also a mother to two kids of her own.
The radio station, along with local sponsors, made all of Brenda’s wishes come true that she asked for. The station’s manager, Scott Allen said “There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when we got the letter. It really inspired us to do something for her.”
