52-year-old Mark Augler was laying on his death bed 4 years ago holding his newborn baby girl in his arms for the first and last time. Days after she was born, Mark passed away from pulmonary fibrosis.
1In 2012, Mark’s wife Diane was due to give birth to their 5th child. During Christmas, Mark had learned that he had beaten cancer and was filled with happiness during the holidays.
But shortly after that, he found out that the eight months of chemotherapy had destroyed his lungs, giving him the pulmonary fibrosis that took his life.
2Mark’s wife Diane told KCTV5, “It was basically like his lungs were soaked in concrete. They couldn’t inhale; they couldn’t pass oxygen through the body. He was in essence suffocating to death.”
So, in February, when Mark was given only a few days to live, they decided to bring their newborn baby girl, Savanah Augler, into their lives early in order for Mark to have the chance to meet her and hold her in his arms.
3Days after that, Mark slipped into a coma and continued to decline from there. As his breathing and heart rate started to drop drastically, Diane placed Savanah in his arms and held onto his hand until he died.
4Although it’s been four long years since Mark has passed away, the kids still honor his memory and talk about him often. They talk about what a great dad he would have been to little Savanah.
